(Reads: 83, since 10-Jun-2011)

Mina El Salvador
This was built in 1918 and it started to operate in 1922. It is situated at 2 850 metres above sea level northeast of Diego de Almagro. It is 7 km from the town Potrerillos.
The mine is located on a summit, the copper smelter known as the third largest in Chile, is right next to it. Its principal production was between 1926 and 1959 for Andes Copper. A total of 1 800 000 tones of fine copper were extracted.

The old mine became depleted around the year 1959, but it continued to operate as a refinery for the mineral extracted from El Salvador, up until 2001 which is when it was dismantled.
