Diego de Almagro(Reads: 118, since 10-Ago-2010)This town of 8,085 inhabitants was formed when the Tres Gracias Mine was exploited in the 17th Century; the town was then known as the "Pueblo Hundidio" (the sunken town). It is located 70km east of Chañaral. Currently local inhabitants work elsewhere in the Chañaral province. In the area you can visit the "Fundición de Cobre de Potrerillos" (a copper smelting plant) which was used during 1913 and 1959; "el Camino Real del Inca", a walking trail built by the Incas for communication purposes throughout their vast empire; and "el Pozo del Inca", a well which was of great importance in the Pre-Colombian period for those who travelled along The Inca Trail. From here you can also visit "la Finca de Chañaral" which is also on The Inca Trail. Today the towns of Diego de Almagro and Inca de Oro receive their water supply from the finca.
