Cauquenes

Vista del Mercado de Cauquenes
The city of Cauquenes is located 394km from Santiago, in the far part of the Central Valley. It has good services and a population of 40,279 inhabitants. It was founded in 1742 with the name of “nuestra Señora de las Mercedes de Manso de Tutuvén”.

While visiting the town you can visit the twin towers of San Alfonso Church, la Plaza de Armas (the main square) and the local market where you can see handicrafts and pottery from Pilén being made. You can also visit Reserva Nacional los Ruiles near the town which covers an area of 45 hectares of native forest and wild flowers. There are also walking paths and areas to camp.

Plaza de Armas
The main square has many trees and pretty green areas. Half a block away on calle Victoria there is a market selling a variety of traditional handicrafts made from reed, horse-hair and wood as well as weaved goods, amongst others. There are also eating places selling fish, fresh seafood and other local products. The market is open from 7.30am to 6pm.

Iglesia San Alfonso
This church is located on calle Montt and was built in 1900.

Pilén
The hamlet of Pilén is located 18km from Caquenes and is well known in the south of Chile for its pottery.

Tapihue
Located 35km from Cauquenes, Tapihue is home to the poet and writer María Ruiz Martínez whose house has been conserved as a National Heritage Site.

Tranque Tutuvén
This reservoir is located 15km to the west of Cauquenes and is a beautiful spot for camping, fishing and picnicking.

Sauzal
This rural village is located 45km north of Cauquenes and is set in a hilly landscape. On the first Sunday in October there is a religious celebration here "Nuestra Señora del Rosario" which is very important to the locals. There are also some folk celebrations which take place at the same time.

In the outskirts of the town at 800m the hill "Name" dominates the local scenery.

Feria Libre
Located next to the city market on calle Balmaceda between Yungay and Antonio Varas this market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.
