Villa Alegre(Reads: 74, since 17-Mar-2011)Located 27 km from the city of Linares, Villa Alegre was founded on 6th May in 1891. It is famous for its extremely old estates known as Huaraculén, Chocoa and Cunaco.
Its history is full of important characters and events and it is the birthplace of Abate Juan Ignacio Molina. The historical records show that in the year 1915 the first Chilean electric railway travelled through its countryside. It is a fertile area for the production of wonderful fruit which provides a good future for its inhabitants. Chichas from villa alegre are famous and compete with the popular orange trees that line the streets and public places. Places to visit in Villa Alegre: Villa Alegre History Museum The museum was opened on 6th May in 1998. It is inside a colonial house which dates back to the year 1871, and which previously served as a primary school and before that a high school. The museum houses a valuable collection of photographs of Villa Alegre, coins, manuscripts of Gabriela Mistral; paintings, religious artifacts, 19th century domestic and wine harvesting machines. The building was declared a National Historical Monument on 26th October in 1998. Templo Parroquial Niño Jesús Villa Alegre church was also declared a Monument. Construction on the building began in the year 1885 and was completed in 1890 using adobe, stones, bricks, oak wood and galvanized iron. It consists of one single nave measuring 30 m by 90 m. The architecture reflects neoclassical influences. The remains of the wise naturist Abate Juan Ignacio Molina are kept inside the church.
