The LLaima Volcano

(Reads: 93, since 26-Feb-2010)

Vista del Volcán Llaima en el Parque Nacional Conguillio
The height of the crater rim is 3,125 mts above sea level. Llaima is the biggest volcano in the area. Its two peaks are craters, each with its permanent plume of smoke; the larger and higher of the two is over 350 metres in diameter. There are glaciers covering an area of 14 km² and it is very active, with some 50 eruptions in historical times. The biggest eruptions in the last century were those of 1927 and 1957, and the most recent have been in 1994 and 2007-8. The name has two possible meanings in Mapudungun (the Mapuche language), either "resuscitated" or "trench" (for the col between the two peaks).

On the slopes of the mountain is the Las Araucarias ski centre, which is equipped with drag lifts and has pistes for skiers of all levels. There are services for ski and equipment hire and ski school, while comfortable lodging is available in the Las Araucarias hut.
