Religious Festival of San Sebastián(Reads: 164, since 22-Ene-2011)Hundreds of believers attend masses scheduled for 20th January every year in order to remember the saint who has the most temples in the world. Early in the morning the believers arrive at San Sebastián Chapel situated in Avenida El Peral, on the corner of Madrid Street, in the district of San Sebastián in the seaside resort of Cartagena.
The religious festivity also consists of the traditional street procession with the image of the Saint and represents one of the most popular religious festivals in this area in the summer. San Sebastián was a Roman soldier in the 3rd century B.C., who was threatened as a result of his faith, that if he did not stop evangelizing he would be shot with arrows until he died. As he did not give up evangelizing he was attacked with darts until he supposedly died. However, that was not the case and he was rescued by a woman of nobility called Irene, he recovered and went to confront the Emperor, who this time made sure that he died. San Sebastián is one of the Saints who has had more temples built in his honour throughout the world and in Chile there is great devotion for his name, given that every year thousands of people travel to Yumbel to thank the patron saint for his religious zeal.
