Places of interest in Papudo(Reads: 397, since 25-Abr-2011)Papudo Fisherman’s Bay
This is located towards the northwest sector of the beach, Playa Chica, and is a traditional tourist attraction. You can watch the fishermen themselves, performing the tasks of extracting, preparing and selling their seafood products, all of which reflect a tradition and job which has survived over a long period of time and remains unchanged. Chalet Recart This is a magnificent piece of architecture, with beautiful views of the coast and dramatic because of its location and colour. It is presently occupied by some of the municipality’s departments and eventually will be used as an arts centre to exhibit art work and house literary events and concerts. Playa Grande (Large Beach) This is a long beach located in the northern part of Papudo. Its high waves make it a perfect beach for surfing and bodyboarding. Lilenes This is a beautiful place, surrounded by a lush, native forest which intertwines with the sea. It has clear sand and a very particular landscape. Plaiyas It is located on the northern side of the beach, opposite la Isla de los lobos (Wolf Island). You can get here by walking along a path with steep summits where you will come across underwater springs spontaneously shooting up from the bowels of the earth which are fed by underground water sources. Along the same path you will find gigantic nalcas, with their own unique flavour as a result of the natural springs and their pure water. Playa Chica (Small Beach) This is one of these Chilean beaches where the sea is very peaceful due to the calm water, which is why Pedro de Valdivia described it in 1545 as "God’s Paradise". The beach is suitable for swimming all year round and water sports can be practised without too much difficulty. Quebrada el Tigre You can reach this place via the southern road leading into Papudo. You will be able to see millennial, Northern Belloto trees, densely vegetated trees and a waterfall that flows down through the rocks. The leafy, native forest forces you to reflect on the importance of nature conservation. The place looks the same today as it was thousands of years ago. The Rock of cups There is a rock with cup/like holes, situated along one side of the 11 de Septiembre Square in Papudo. It is on the northern side of a ravine which nourishes a small forest of molles, boldos and the odd peumo, found at the lower end of the rock. It is a surviving legacy of the Pincunche people who used to live in the area. The surface containing the cup/like shapes is smooth and leans off to one side. The perforations are not symmetrical. Local inhabitants call it “The rock with the little holes”. San Pedro’s Temple As you are leaving the seaside resort Papudo, heading towards la Ligua, you will come across the Church of San Pedro Pescador, which catches your eye because of its perfect geometry. As you get closer you can distinguish two large bulks of rough concrete, painted white, which intercept each other perpendicularly and gradually reorientate the observer’s footsteps towards its interior. To access the church you walk over a sandy surface which is subtly elevated and surrounded by olive trees. This platform turns into the access route leading towards the first concrete bulk. The latter is made up of what looks to be a white envelope which has been folded to construct a hollow, transparent interior at one end. Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Church Papudo`s Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Church was opened in 1918. It is a neocolonial styled building which was designed by the architect Alberto Cruz Montt, who was also responsible for important buildings like the Banco Central and the club de la Unión. The temple is positioned at the edge of the sea. The base is in the shape of a latin cross and is just one single nave. The entrance way facade is impressive with its shapes and barroque engravings, so too is the steeple which is an integral part of the building. Both the main nave and the transcept have reinforcements which are externally appreciated, creating a rhythmic tone with the church`s lateral facades. Each of these modules has windows with dramatic cast iron work. The wooden, carved eaves are another interesting decorative feature. The roof is covered in small wooden tiles. Camino El Conquistador Pedestrian Walkway This was inaugurated on 22nd February in 1986, along the town’s western seafront and people go for relaxing walks along it enjoying the ocean and the sea breeze. The path leads you to the Bats Cave, the Pirate Drake`s Cave and "Los Changos" beach, which is otherwise and unpleasantly known as the "pigs" beach. Pullally. Typically known as a rural area which maintains its rustic customs and traditions like sowing and harvesting the traditional local crops, its classic rodeo held in the halfmoon ring, its extraordinary tradition of muleteering on the hills, cattle branding, Chilean races and many other traditions. It also celebrates the ranchero festival and religious festivals. Las Salinas de Pullally The lower section corresponds to Las Salinas de Pullally beach, which has natural salt plains, dunes, and relics – consisting of various objects found in the area – which bear evidence of an indigenous settlement.
