Religious Festivals in Salamanca(Reads: 348, since 27-Jul-2010)Easter: This celebration relates to the traditional religious celebration from Salamanca in Spain which has no clear date of origin. There is no clear record to show since what date Easter has been celebrated in Salamanca but there is evidence to show that the celebrations date from before the city was founded. The procession where the figure of Christ is carried to the summit of Héroes de la Concepción Hill, in the city is an annual tradition which recreates the Way of the Cross. As well as the religious celebrations the locals also have the tradition of setting up a large market along Avenida Infante (situated at you enter the town). These characteristics of the festivities make it unique in the country. Fiesta El Tambo: On the 15th of August every year in El Tambo, a few kilometres away from Salamanca, the Fiesta de El Tránsito takes place. During the festival which is in honour of the virgin it is common to see “bailes chinos” (traditional Chilean dances). Many of the visitors come from the area south of the Choapa River, such as Tahuinco, Limahuida, Las Cañas, Valle de Camisa, etc. Fiesta de Manquehua: This festival takes place on the 12th of October every year and is known as the “Fiesta Chica de la Virgen de Andacollo”. The festival originated over a hundred years ago when a local man from Manquehua promised the virgin a festival every year in exchange for his son’s health. The festival starts with a novena and ends with a procession which goes from the old Zoiza family home (the originators of the festival) to the mine. La Fiesta de Manquehua, like most religious festivals in the Coquimbo region include dancing and “bailes chinos” (traditional Chilean dances).
