Built in 1863, the church and convent belong to the Franciscan order. They are housed in a beautiful, colonial-style building with gothic and neo-classical influences. This was the first church built in the Araucanía Region. Museo Histórico In this museum you will find various rooms and sections describing the historical life of the city. Plaza de Armas de Angol Considered one of the country’s most beautiful plazas, it is the work of the ‘El Vergel’ nursery. It is encircled by a double row of lime trees, and in its center there is a pond with a four marble statues, one at each corner, which were created by Virginio Arias and imported from Italy; they represent the four “old” continents of the time (1862): America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Weeping elms surround the pool and shade the benches, and four large trees stand at the four corners. These are a huge magnolia, a Lawson cypress, a cedar of Lebanon and a diaphanous ‘criptomeria elegans’. On the western side of the plaza there is a monument to Bernardo O’Higgins, unveiled in 1957. Museo Dillman Bullock This museum is in the ‘El Vergel’ park grounds. Opened in 1975, it is divided into three rooms: biology, natural history and archaeology. In these rooms you can see interesting collections of funeral urns and pre-Mapuche and Mapuche archaeological artifacts. There are also exhibits of birds, birds’ eggs, mollusks, mammals, insects, reptiles, minerals, ceramics, volcanic materials, etc.
