Antofagasta has a population of 255,000 inhabitants and is located on the northern seaboard of the country, 1,361 km from Santiago. It is famous for its good weather and almost permanent sunshine.
Its important historic past is reflected in the splendid national monuments that it possesses. Amongst them is the Barrio Histórico, where the Muelle Salitrero (the nitrates dock), the former Maritime Authority building and the former Customs House are located.

At present the main cultural and economic activities of the North of Chile are concentrated here. It is the port of embarkation for the copper mined at the biggest mines in the world: Chuquicamata and La Escondida.

If you travel north along the coast road, you will come to La Portada de Antofagasta. On the way you will see the fishing terminal and a number of beaches. Further to the north you will encounter resorts like Mejillones.

The attractions of the city are varied: restaurants, pubs, handicraft fairs, etc. It has an excellent tourist service infrastructure.
