Caspana

This town, with a population of 400 inhabitants, is at an altitude of 3,305 meters, and lies 84 km from Calama. It is surrounded by a fertile valley with 47 hectares of different crops. The architecture of its buildings is characterized by the use of liparita stone with mud roofs.

The main activity of the area is the cultivation of various vegetables and flowers, which are sent for sale in the city of Calama.

Features you can visit include the Iglesia de San Lucas; a museum explaining the local culture; and stalls selling handicrafts made of alpaca wool, cactus etc. To get there you have to cross a stone footbridge.

Access to the church is through the bell tower. The church is surrounded by a two-level wall. It was built before the year 1641 using dressed stone, which was cemented and then plastered with mud on cactus boards. It was declared a National Monument in 1951.
