Pukará de Turi

(Reads: 2153, since 26-Ene-2004)

This hilltop fort built by the Atacameño people is located at an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level, 75 km east of Calama. It was the biggest fortress of this culture, covering an area of 3.5 hectares.

Its construction dates back to the twelfth century. It was built on a level platform in which you can identify squares, straight streets and houses. The majority of the buildings are made from volcanic rocks combined with smaller stones, using a dry-stone wall technique. Others are made of adobe, which started to be used for building from the end of the 15th Century.

The town was abandoned in the middle of the 16th Century, after the arrival of the Spaniards.

It was declared a National Monument in 1982.
