The Climate in Chile

(Reads: 1483, since 03-Mar-2010)

Vista de Santiago de Chile

Chile covers a huge geographical range, and presents a correspondingly wide variety of climatic conditions, including desert, mediterranean steppe, warm wet temperate, wet maritime, cold steppe, tundra and polar. The Andes Mountain Range has high altitude conditions and the high peaks an icy climate. From the far north of Chile (Norte Grande) to the intermediate zone north of the capital (Norte Chico), the climate is dry with relatively scarce rainfall. The further north one goes, the drier it becomes, as can be seen in the cities of Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta, where rain is scarce all year round. The climate of the central zone of Chile presents greater seasonal variation. In winter the temperatures are generally low and there is some rainfall. Summer temperatures may rise as high as 38°C. Winter temperatures in the south and far south of the country can be very low. The typical feature of these parts of Chile, apart from the low winter temperatures, is the high rainfall – and the further south one goes, the colder and wetter the climate becomes. In summer the temperature can rise quite high but there is always a possibility of rain at any time of year.
