Located 990 km south of Punta Arenas, the principal populated area is Villa Las Estrellas, with about 1,200 people living in the territory all year round. The Chilean territory comprises an area of 1,250,000 km². Antarctic tourism means enjoying the scenery and marine life of this remote part of the world. To get to the Antarctic, you must go by plane from Punta Arenas.

Among the species that comprise the Antarctic marine fauna are the blue whale, the killer whale, the elephant seal, the Weddell seal, the Antarctic fur seal, the Adelie, Gentoo, Antarctic King and Emperor penguins, as well as birds such as the petrel albatross and the Antarctic pigeon.

The Base Presidente Frei, Centro Metereológico Presidente Frei and Villa las Estrellas, where Chilean families devoted to research live, are all located in the Chilean Antarctic territory.

Trips to the Antarctic are subject to weather conditions, so it is best to make inquiries in Punta Arenas regarding the frequency and possibility of flights.
