This is the last town that intersects the Carretera Austral, it has 4,000 inhabitants and is found 334 km south of Coihaique. The city was founded in 1954 under the name of Pueblo Nuevo.

It’s the center of air services for the rest of the austral zone. There are boarding houses, a supermarket, a gas station, a public telephone and fax machine, a hospital, a bank and a cultural center.

From Cochrane you can make trips to the Waterfalls of the river Baker, where there’s a path you can follow, the Campo de Hielo Norte (North Ice Field), and Lago (Lake) Cochrane, amongst other places of interest. One of the fauna that stands out is the huemul, the southern Andean deer, which is protected, and lives in the Tamango National Reserve.
