Tamango National Reserve

(Reads: 1004, since 19-May-2004)

Located 9 km from Cochrane, this national reserve has a surface area of 6,925 hectares, and is protected by CONAF.

You can reach the reserve by car by crossing the river Cochrane, 1 km from the town, towards the hills that rise up from the south bank.

A large community of huemeles (southern Andean deer) from the Cervidae family live here, which grow to 100 cm in height and 70 km in weight, who live in groups of 2 or 3. The color of their fur varies according to the season between a golden yellow and patches of gray. Their antlers have two points and they are found on hillsides and steep ground, no higher than 1,300 meters. It’s important to remember that they are a protected species, and as such hunting them is banned.

The flora of the reserve is mainly made up of lenga and coihues that you can observe on the guided tours that are available. There are cabañas, campsites and picnic areas.
