Nestled in the extreme south of Chile, 1,639 km from Santiago, Coihaique (population 36,376) was founded in 1929 and today is the main entry point for the surrounding region.

It has a cool, wet climate all year round. Temperatures range from 6 to 16°C in summer and from –5 to 5°C in winter.

Attractions in this area include the Museo Regional de la Patagonia, the Reserva Nacional Río Simpson, Reserva Nacional Coihaique and Lago Elizalde.
