Pali Aike National Park

(Reads: 2773, since 26-Ene-2004)

This National Park, covering some 5,000 hectares, was created in 1970 and is also known as ‘The Devil’s Lava Flow’. It is 196 km north west of Punta Arenas. Its purpose is to protect an area of pampa with its population of guanacos, ñandúes and armadillos, set in what looks like a lunar landscape.

There are low hills and craters which form natural overhangs and caves, the most famous of which is Pali Aike, declared a National Monument, where evidence of the earliest Magellanic people has been found. In the Fell cave, you can see rock paintings which date back 9,000 years.

There are four trails to walk: Cráter Morad del Diablo, 1.7 km; Cueva Pali Aike, 600 meters; Laguna Ana, 1.5 km; and Cueva Pali Aike Laguna Ana, 900 meters.

The climate in this sector is a cold steppe climate, with annual precipitation of 200 to 300 mm, and an average temperature of 4º C.
Entrance to the park is free, but ask the warden about the state of the road.
