Combarbalá

(Reads: 1381, since 17-Jun-2004)

Located on an arid plain on the banks of the river of the same name, this town has 4,882 inhabitants and is 191 km from La Serena, 134 km from Ovalle, and 178 km from Illapel.

It is a little town with narrow, picturesque streets with adobe buildings colored with earth.

It was founded with the name Villa San Francisco de Borja de Combarbalá in 1789 by Juan Ignacio Flores.

You can visit the church, located opposite the plaza, decorated with motifs of the diaguita culture. Another attraction is the handicrafts you can find here made out of combarbalita, a semi-soft stone similar to marble, that was declared a National Stone of Chile in 1993.
