Salamanca

(Reads: 293, since 17-Mar-2011)

The city of Salamanca was founded in 1844 and is located in the heart of the Choapa Valley, 32 km from Illapel and 90 km from Los Vilos, when heading towards the Andes.
It is on the northern side of the river Choapa. The climate is warm and dry with very hot, clear summer days. The heat, the greenery of the one hundred year old monkey puzzle trees in its main square, the unique clear night skies, the hospitality of its inhabitants, the legends of witches and wizards, not to mention the fact that you are surrounded by multi-coloured hills and fertile valleys, make this the perfect place to visit and enjoy.

The city enjoys an adequate infrastructure in terms of hotels and gastronomy. It provides so many areas which are suitable for a wide range of activities like hunting rabbits and partridges, fishing trout and silverside, horseback riding, handcrafted wine tasting, participating in traditional festivities, climbing hills, purchasing handcrafts and escaping from the annoying urban hustle and bustle. Salamanca is the perfect place to relax at any time of the year.

You can also visit the Caseríos de Higuerillo and the Church of la Rosa Mística (the Mystic Rose), Panguecillo and Quelén Bajo, with a sanctuary framed by reeds.

You can get more information about the city in the Tourist Information Office situated in the Plaza de Armas on Matilde Salamanca Street (opposite Pérgola Escenario) or in the City Hall on Bulnes Street along the side of the Main Square.
