The Chango People

(Reads: 3552, since 03-Mar-2010)

The Chango people lived along the coast from Arica to the Choapa River, surviving by fishing and hunting sea lions and whales, and gathering other marine species. They put to sea using boats made of inflated sea lion skins, venturing as far as 30 km off shore.

They established their camps in sites where shell-fish collection and fishing were good, going out in bands to reconnoitre new sites. They traded with the indians of the interior (Aymaras, Diaguitas and Atacameños), from whom they obtained agricultural products. They lived in shelters sewn of sea lion skins, supported on sticks or whale ribs. Their fishing implements included nets, hooks and copper-pointed harpoons.
