Located 30 km south of Villarrica and 17 km northeast of Panguipulli, this lake has a surface area of approximately 180 km², and lies 2,000 meters above sea level.

It is characterized by it is length and width, and on its north shore you will find the resort of Licán Ray with a wide choice of cabañas and summer facilities.

It has seven small islands, including Trailafquén, Balboa, Los Monos and Las Cuevas. It has a lovely beach, but lacks any kind of tourist infrastructure.

Licán Ray holds the record of the longest barbecue in Chile, measuring more than 2 km in length, bringing together more than 500 diners.

Lake Calafquén’s conditions are suitable for swimming, yachting, and fishing. The lake is shared betwen the "Region of the Lakes" and the resorts of Coñaripe and Calafquén.
