Fray Jorge National Park(Reads: 2510, since 17-Jun-2004)Comprises 9,959 hectares at altitudes of between 0 and 667 meters, in the costal area of the Limarí zone, located 45 km east of Ovalle.
It was declared a National Park in 1941 and a World Reserve of the Biosphere in 1977. It is recommended that you visit between October and November, flowering season for the lush vegetation that grows in the Park. Furthermore, numbers of visitors are restricted to lessen the threat of fire. The Park is reached along a semi-desert road, that brings you to the Visitor Control Center, where you’ll be provided with information about entry to the park. At the highest point, there is a hydrophilic wood like you get in the area of Valdivia, where cinnamon trees, olive trees, and ferns grow, that have survived since prehistoric times due to the condensation of the coastal mist. The park is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. During summer it is open from Thursday to Sunday.
