You reach this national park by turning off the Carretera Austral at km 105. It covers an area of 48,232 hectares and was created in 1988. The park is located near the cordillera Patagónica del Pacífico, and includes the Yates and Hornopirén volcanoes, and the basin of the Río Negro.

It is also possible to visit the Lago Pinto Concha, which lies at the foot of Yates Volcano, and Lago Inexplorado, which has an area of about 150 hectares, and you can explore the remaining 9,000 hectares of native alerce forest. You can also find mixed woods composed of coigüe, tepa, ulmo and lenga in the higher parts of the park.

More than 50% of the area of the park is covered in forest, in the rest of the area there are more than 3,000 hectares of ice-fields.
The administration of the park is under the control of CONAF and its opening hours are from Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00. Entrance is free.
