(Kuchen is a sweet tart). In the main square, the "Plaza de Armas", large tables full of different types of kuchen are set up for visitors to taste and buy these delicious puddings which are made by descendants of German immigrants using traditional 19th Century recipes. This festival has become a local tradition since it was started by Puerto Varas Council in 1997 with the idea of remembering the first German inhabitants who came to live the south of Chile and who brought their heritage with them. As such, it not only this gastronomic tradition which is celebrated but also the music and traditional dances of both countries. The festival lasts the best part of the day and is a fun way to get to know both Chilean and German traditions and to participate in a variety of competitions and dances.
