Fuerte Bulnes

(Reads: 833, since 26-Ene-2004)

Located 60 km from Punta Arenas on Ruta 9 Sur, this fort was founded in 1843 under the government of Manuel Bulnes Prieto as the first Chilean settlement in the far south. It is of great historical importance as it was the first Patagonian colony on the Magellan Straits.

Today you can visit a reconstruction of the original fort, raised in 1843 on the rocky mound of Santa Ana. It is complete, with its walls and buildings made of trunks and turf as was normal in those days.

In Fuerte Bulnes there is a historical museum named Museo O’Higgins where objects and documents from the history of Patagonia are preserved.
It was declared a National Monument in 1968.
