This town lies 2,475 meters above sea level and has 546 inhabitants. Thanks to the purity of its water, it is an oasis which allows the cultivation of every kind of fruit. On one side of the square is the church of San Lucas with its separate bell tower, which has been declared a National Monument.

Nowadays, the principal activity of the town centres on the construction of impressive sculptures of volcanic rock. As a consequence it has become an important handicraft centre.

San Lucas Church and Bell tower

The church, typical of the Atacameño culture, was built in stone around 1744. Across the road stands the bell tower made of dressed stone cemented with mud, which was constructed in 1750.
