![]() Valley of the Moon(Reads: 5867, since 23-Ene-2004)The Valley of the Moon is a fascinating area dotted with sand and stone formations which floods and winds have shaped for thousands of years, creating a series of soft desert colours. Many small hills and impressive sharp peaks characterise this place.
This spot, of incomparable beauty, resembles a fragment of lunar landscape. This marvellous natural phenomenon was created by the meeting of the cordillera and the desert, and by landslides from the cordillera ravines which softly changed the gradient of its slopes. On moonlit nights, the valley is an indescribably impressive sight, full of majesty, silence and icy beauty. It has been declared a Natural Sanctuary and is part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve. It is located in the Cordillera de la Sal (salt cordillera). It is situated west of San Pedro on the old road to Calama, south of the new highway. This place is, deservedly, one of the most visited of the area, not only because of its accessibility, but also for its beauty. The tour is recommended at dusk, when you can climb the sand dunes to take in the beauty of the surroundings.
