This street has been the principal commercial artery of the city since colonial times. It was turned into a pedestrian precinct in 1977 and re-modeled in 1999. It is now the axis with the greatest social, commercial and functional activity in Santiago, and its four blocks contain the big department stores. The precinct opens onto the principal artery of the city, Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins, opposite the building of the Universidad de Santiago and the Iglesia de San Francisco, the cloisters of which have been converted into a Colonial Museum. Paseo Peatonal Huérfanos This street was converted into a pedestrian precinct in 1977 and re-modeled in 1999. The precinct is a busy commercial center, containing the best shoe shops in the country and a great variety of cinemas. You can observe the busy life of the city center, and the singers and actors who gather here. Paseo Peatonal Avenida Bulnes This pedestrian precinct is lined with the buildings of great institutions, for example, the bookshop of the Fondo de Cultura Económica.
