Plaza Aníbal Pinto
The square is located in the city center, between Prat, Bulnes, Claro Solar and Antonio Varas streets, in the heart of the commercial area. Facing the Plaza are the Municipality, the Cathedral and various old buildings, which nowadays house commercial institutions. In the center of the square is the 'La Araucana' monument, the work of local artists, representing the protagonists of the city's history; a Machi (witch doctor or wise woman), a soldier, a Mapuche warrior and a settler. There is also a modern exhibition and conference room, a fountain, an amphitheater and a platform for musicians. It is full of well-cared for old trees. Mercado Municipal de Temuco The Municipal market was inaugurated in April 1929. It is a traditional point of sale for Mapuche handicraft products, and therefore it is a visit which should not be missed in the center of Temuco. Textile products, silverwork, wood carvings and antiques are for sale. There are also numerous restaurants where you can buy delicious local dishes and seafood. Access to the market is by Portales, Rodríguez, Aldunate and Bulnes streets. Opening times in winter are Monday to Saturday from 08.00-18.00 hrs, Sundays and holidays from 08.00-15.00 hrs. In summer, hours are Monday to Saturday from 08.00-20.00 hrs, Sundays and holidays from 08.00-15.00 hrs. Museo Regional de la Araucanía The Regional Museum was created in 1940 and is housed in what was once the old house of Carlos Thiers. This was constructed in 1924 and has been declared a National Monument. There are complete displays of Mapuche anthropology, archaeology and ethnology. It has a specialized library with maps and plans of the city of Temuco. There is also a collection of paintings of regional subjects. It is located in Avenida Alemania 084. A small charge is made for entrance, except on Sundays. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 09.00 to 17.00 hrs, Saturday from 11.00 to 17.00 hrs and Sunday from 11.00 to 18.00 hrs. Cerro Ñielol This Natural Monument, which stands on the edge of the city of Temuco, covers 89.5 hectares and rises to 200 meters above sea level. There are four walking trails, and at the top a fine viewpoint. It is administered by CONAF and is an area of protected forest. The native forest is composed of lingue, laurel, raulí, coigüe and roble, with copihue flowers growing among them. There is also a range of fauna, including bandurria, tiuque, fox, chilla and monito del monte, the smallest marsupial in the world. There are small pools, viewpoints, walking trails, picnic areas, children's games, a restaurant and an environmental information center. On the top of the hill is the Observatorio Volcanológico de los Andes del Sur, (Vulcanological Observatory of the Southern Andes), the only vulcanological observatory in Chile; it is not open to the public. Access to the park is up Calle Prat. It is open all year round until 22.00 hrs. Parque Museo Ferroviario The railway museum is to the north of the station and is known as the 'Casa de Máquinas' (the "Engine House"). It contains a number of locomotives manufactured between 1907 and 1953. It has been declared a National Monument. Sitio de Huimpil About one hundred objects have been recovered in excavations carried out in the Huimpil cemetery, located to the north of Temuco. The pottery is the only item which has managed to survive the environmental deterioration normal in these latitudes. Casa de la Mujer Mapuche The Mapuche Women's House was created in order to encourage the production and sale of pottery and textile handicrafts, and gold and silver jewelry. Women from various indigenous communities throughout the region gather here to keep alive the techniques and designs handed down through the generations, and this guarantees its traditional character and the continuance of the expression of their particular culture. The house is in Prat 283. Centro Comercial Mall Mirage This commercial center is located in the Avenida Alemania sector, and contains stores offering a range of goods, including clothes, interior design, books, gifts, and a tea salon. There is plenty of parking space, and nearby you can find a supermarket, photographic service, banks and a gas station. The address is Torremolinos 410. Centro Comercial Mall Temuco 2000 This commercial center is at the northern entrance to Temuco. There is a wide range of stores, restaurants and coffee-shops, as well as children's games and public restrooms. There is also a large car-park, a supermarket and a tourist information office. It is in Calle Rudecindo Ortega 1738. Centro de Producción Artesanal de la Universidad Católica de Temuco This is a workshop devoted to the reproduction of Mapuche silver and ceramic handicrafts, where traditional methods are preserved. It is at Avenida Alemania 1442, on the corner of 18 de Septiembre, and has a public sales room. It is open to the public from Monday through Friday from 09.00 to 13.00 hrs and 15.00 to 18.00 hrs. Complejo Deportivo Municipal Germán Becker A complex for sporting and leisure activities. There are gardens, professional soccer pitches, tennis courts, roller-blading track, hockey pitch and bicycle-cross track, athletics circuit, restaurant and an olympic swimming pool which is open in summer. The complex is surrounded by beautiful green areas and paths. It is at the corner of Avenida Pablo Neruda and Calle Hochstetter. Feria Libre Aníbal Pinto An open-air market located in the thickly populated area near the Estación de Ferrocarriles (the Railway station). It was constructed in 1945, in order to create a centralized sales outlet for the agricultural produce generated in the area. It consists of 700 stands spread over three blocks in this picturesque sector of old Temuco. You can buy fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy produce, pulses and handicrafts. It is located in Calle Aníbal Pinto, in the Estación de Ferrocarriles sector. It is open to the public from 08.00 to 17.00 hrs in winter and from 08.00 to 18.00 hrs in summer. More Articles in Temuco
