Pedro de Valdivia Saltpeter Office

(Reads: 2315, since 30-Jun-2004)

This settlement, close to Tocopilla, dates from 1911. Today all that is left is the mining plant, due to the fact that the city was dismantled in 1996.

It was one of the most modern saltpeter Offices of its age. In 1931 Guggenheim bought the lands of this saltpeter Office, as well as others in the surrounding area, together forming a huge production center.

In 1965 it changed hands to Soquimich (the Chemistry and Mining Society of Chile), and in 1996 it was abandoned.

You can visit the plaza, with the church, theater, school and hospital, that have all been declared National Monuments.
