Huasco

(Reads: 1378, since 30-Jun-2004)

This picturesque seaside resort is located near to the mouth of the river Huasco, 57 km from Vallenar.

The beaches here are excellent, suitable for swimming and water sports such as sailing, surfing, diving and fishing. Of particular note are the Playa Grande, located in the city, Tres Playitas (Three Little Beaches), and Baratillo Beach, towards the north of Huasco.

The climate of the sector is hot, without any big thermal variations, permitting outdoor activities all year round. One of the most typical places here is the Church of San Pedro, a reminder of Huasco’s history as a fishing town.

The Fuerte Sur (South Fort) or Esmeralda is one of three forts built in 1879, and dominates the Bay. It is full of historical character, and during the War of the Pacific was used as a surveillance point.
