Therefore, one of the most frequently used forms of transport in this city are ascensores (elevators), which are the following:
Artillería This ascensor was opened in the year in 1893 and is located on Cerro Artillería. Its lower station is in Plaza Wheelwright and the top station is in Paseo 21 de Mayo. Barón Located on Avenida España - Avenida Argentina, and climbing to Avenida Diego Portales. It was opened in the year 1906 and was the first ascensor to work with an electric motor, which came from Germany. Concepción Located on Cerro Concepción, this ascensor leaves from Calle Prat with Pasaje Elías and climbs to Paseo Gervasoni. It was opened in the year 1883 and it was the first to be built in Valparaíso. It works by the use of water as a counter-weight. Cordillera Located on Cerro Cordillera, the lower level of the ascensor is on Calle Serrano and the higher level is on Eleutorio Ramírez. It was opened in the year 1887 and it is the steepest, and second oldest, ascensor in Valparaíso. El Peral Situated on Cerro Alegre, this ascensor leaves from Plaza Justicia and climbs to Paseo Yugoslavo. It was opened in the year 1902. Espíritu Santo Situated on Cerro Bellavista, this ascensor leaves from Calle Aldunate and climbs to Calle Rudolph. It was opened in the year 1911. Florida Situated on Cerro Florida, Calle Carrera is the station on the lower level and the higher level is on Calle Marconi. It was opened in the year 1906. Larraín This is on Calle Coronel Reinas; it leaves from Avenida Argentina and goes up to Avenida Pedro Montt and Calle Hermanos Clark. It was opened in 1909. Lecheros Located on Calle Eusebio Lillo (Pasaje Quillota), this ascensor goes up to Calle Lecheros. It was opened in the year 1906. Mariposas Located on Cerro Mariposas, you can take this ascensor from Calle Gaspar Marín up to Paseo Barbosa. It is the most used in Valparaíso and was opened in 1904. Monjas Located on Cerro Monjas, the lower level of this ascensor is on Avenida Baquedano and it climbs to Calle Bianchi. It was opened in 1912. Polanco Located on Cerro Polanco, you take this ascensor from Calle Simpson to its higher level where the tower is unnumbered (there is also a midway station). You reach it through a 150 meter long tunnel leading to the single carriage, which climbs vertically for 60 meters inside the hill. It was built in 1915. Reina Victoria Located on Cerro Concepción, the lower station for this ascensor is in Calle Elías and it climbs to Paseo Dimalow. It was opened in the year 1902. San Agustín Located on Cerro Cordillera, you take this ascensor from José Tomás Ramos and it climbs to Calle Canal. It was opened in the year 1913. Villa Seca Located on Cerro Playa Ancha, Calle Antonio Varas is the lower station and it climbs to Calle Pedro Gallo. It was opened in 1907.
