Monuments in Valparaíso

There are a number of monuments in Valparaíso which have been constructed in honor of various important figures, both Chileans and foreigners:

Arco Británico
This arch was inaugurated in the year 1911, being a project of the Chilean architect, Alfredo Azancot. It is covered in white marble and surmounted by the figure of the lion of the British Empire. On the sides are medallions with the images of Cochrane, O’Higgins, Simpson and O’Brian, with the stylized coats of arms of the two countries. It was donated by the British Colony resident in Valparaíso to mark the 100(150)th anniversary of the independence of Chile, and 375(425) years from the discovery of Valparaíso.

Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme
This monument was built on the initiative of and with funds contributed by the Valparaíso police force as a tribute to the Padre de la Patria. It was inaugurated on September 17th 1910 and stands on the Cerro O’Higgins.

Busto a Juan Bautista Pastene
Inaugurated on October 12th 1961, this bust is located in Parque Italia. It was placed there in honor of the Italian captain, navigator and explorer in the Spanish service. He was the first Governor of Valparaíso and the first Admiral of the Pacific Ocean. The bust was donated to Valparaíso by the Italian city of Genoa.

Camilo Henríquez
This monument is located between Avenida Brasil and Calle Rodríguez and was provided as a tribute to Camilo Henríquez, Chilean politician and writer, and founder of the first national newspaper, La Aurora de Chile. It was carved by the sculptor Ricardo Santander.

Carlos Condell
This monument was inaugurated in 1985 and is to be found in the Plaza Aníbal Pinto.

Cristóbal Colón
The monument to Christopher Columbus was inaugurated on September 23rd 1877. It was ordered from France in 1875 and it was originally placed on the Crucero Rubio, on one side of the Parque Italia. Since 1895 it has stood in its current location on Avenida Brazil and Calle Freire. The Columbus monument has the distinction of being the first raised to the discoverer of America in this continent, and the second in the world.

Diego Portales
This monument is located on Avenida Brasil and Calle Pudeto, and pays tribute to the statesman, politician, businessman and economist, Diego Portales. It is also a homage by the Valparaíso Chamber of Commerce to mark 450 years of the city’s existence.

Duque de Caxais, Luis Alves de Lima e Silva
This statue celebrates a distinguished Brazilian public figure, and is a tribute to Brazil by the Municipality of Valparaíso. Inaugurated on September 7th 1959, it is located on Avenida Brasil and Calle Huito.

Eduardo de la Barra
This statue represents a Chilean writer, editor of La Unión newspaper and rector of the high school Liceo N°1 de Hombres in Valparaíso in 1877. It is situated in the Liceo Eduardo De la Barra on Calle Colón.

Eleuterio Ramírez
This monument was erected on the June 4th 1944 and is to be found in the Plaza Eleutorio Ramírez, on Cerro Cordillera.

Eloy Alfaro
Erected on October 10th 1938, this monument is located on Avenida Brasil and Calle San Ignacio. It was raised in honor of the Ecuadorian general and politician, who was president of his country during the years 1902 to 1906. It is a symbol of Chilean-Ecuadorian friendship, marking the 118th Anniversary of the Independence of Guayaquil.

Francisco Bilbao
Raised in honor of the Chilean writer and politician, this monument is situated in Plaza Wheelwright.

Francisco de Paula Santander
Located on Avenida Brasil and Simón Bolívar, this monument was donated by Columbia in 1963. It initially stood opposite the Reloj Turri but it was moved in 1981 to its current location.

Guillermo Wheelwright
This statue was erected on February 12th 1877 and is currently located in Plaza Wheelwright opposite the customs building.

Ignacio Carrera Pinto
Inaugurated in 1982, this statue celebrates the centenary of the Battle of Concepción. It is located on Avenida Brasil and Calle 12 de febrero.

Isabel la Católica
Located on Avenida Brasil and Calle Edwards, this monument was inaugurated on August 7th 1976 in honor of the Queen of Spain who was Columbus’ patron in his voyages. It was constructed in Spain by Emilio Laiz and was a donation from the Institute of Hispanic Culture.

Juan Bautista Alberdi
Inaugurated on August 28th 1985 and located on Avenida Argentina, this statue represents an Argentinian writer who came to live in Chile during the rule of the dictator Rosas and settled in Valparaíso.

Juan de Saavedra
This monument was erected in honor of the Spanish captain who discovered the Bay of Valparaíso in the year 1536. It was an initiative of the Corporación de Arte y Turismo de Valparaíso and was financed by SOCIBER Ltda. The monument was inaugurated in 1977 and is located on Avenida Brasil and Avenida Francia.

José Manuel Balmaceda
Erected in 1920 and standing on Avenida Brasil and Avenida Francia, this monument pays homage to José Manuel Balmaceda, who was the founder of the newspaper La Libertad. He was a minister and a member of parliament, and was elected president in 1886.

Loba Capitolina
This sculpture was donated to the Municipality of Valparaíso by the Italian Community. The 1.40 meter tall figure is cast in bronze and was placed in the Parque Italia on September 13th 1936.

Lord Cochrane
Inaugurated on February 12th 1873, this monument was originally located in Plaza Sotomayor but was later moved to its current location on Avenida Brasil and Bellavista in the year 1920. It was the first monument to be raised in Valparaíso on the initiative of Intendente Francisco Echaurren.

Manuel Blanco Encalada
This monument, inaugurated on October 10th 1968, stands on Calle Blanco and Bellavista. It is a tribute from the Chilean Navy to the Commander-in-Chief of the first squadron, Vice-Admiral Manuel Blanco Encalada.

Micaela Cáceres viuda de Balboa
This monument was originally located between Calle Rawson and Calle Victoria and is currently located between Avenida Argentina and Calle Colón. It was inaugurated in May 1955 and pays tribute to the honorary citizen who was a precursor of women’s rights.

Monumento a los Héroes Navales
Inaugurated on May 21st 1886, this monument pays tribute to the heroes of the naval combat of Iquique and Punta Gruesa during the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). In this crypt are the remains of Arturo Prat, Serrano, Riquelme and the Unknown Sailor.

Monumento Al Bombero
Located on Avenida Brasil and Calle Freire, this was ordered from France by the fire brigade as a tribute to its martyrs.

Monumento Al Pescador
Erected in the year 1983, this monument stands near the Caleta Portales. It was created by the artist Ricardo Santander and it was entirely financed by the fishermen of the creek.
