The Chilean Historic and Military Museum (MHM) is inside the Alcazár Building. The latter was declared a Historic Monument in1990 in recognition of the longevity of its architectural contribution to national heritage. It was built at the end of the 19th century by architect Henry Víctor Villeneuve.
The MHM offers a chronological exhibition on the History of Chile with unique interactive resources. The museum collection is distributed throughout 20 rooms and recounts Chilean History from the pre-Hispanic period up until1960, travelling through the Conquista, its Independence, The Pacific War, the World Wars and many more historical landmarks.
Heritage and modern objects blend together, by means of multiple special effects such as lighting effects, sensors, sounds and smoke. These make way for a playful experience intertweaving educational and interactive learning, thanks to state of the arts, multimedia technology.
Professional, bilingual guides are available as well as educational programmes for schools, multimedia, information stations providing additional information and an up to date, learning room for children where they can get information on the history of their country by playing games.
The MHM also acts as a Cultural Learning Centre which offers an open space for all expressions of culture and diversity and unites them in one single place. We have temporary exhibition rooms for this specific purpose where young artists can display their art, an events hall, a central courtyard which can seat up to 3 000 people, an auditorium, a café, a car park, and a library that specializes in the History of Chile, the Army and Military Science, which is open to the general public.
