Las Campanas Astronomical Observatory(Reads: 5525, 23-Ene-2004)Located 157 km north of La Serena and 94 km from La Higuera. You can get there by going north on the Pan-American Highway Ruta 5. After 125 km, you arrive at a junction. From the turning, it is 32 km to the observatory.
It is a modern observatory located under the clearest skies in the world, standing 2,510 meters above sea level. La Campana has great capacity for observing the universe and taking very clear photographs. It has four telescopes and is also equipped with auxiliary resources. Its main telescope is 2.5 m in diameter. Responsibility for the observatory, its operation and research belongs to American observatories, with the participation of the Universidad de Chile. Visits, which are only permitted on Saturdays, are restricted, and it is essential to book a place in advance by phoning (2) 2285-006 in Santiago. The visitor must have his own transport.
