Casablanca Valley

(Reads: 344, 04-Sep-2009)

Planting of vines in this valley first started in 1982, with a mere 20 hectares. By 1992 the area had some 700 hectares of plantings, and that figure has continued to rise to a total of over a thousand today, and some 25 wineries installed. The wine-growing area lies 80 kilometres from Santiago and 41 km from Valparaíso.

Its altitude is nowhere more than 400 metres above sea level. 90% of the total area is planted with the classic varieties, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Merlot.

The location is favoured with steady coastal breezes which produce a stable, temperate climate, with an average annual temperature of 14.4 degrees Celsius. Frosts only occur in winter between June and August, and summer temperatures rise to 25 degrees Celsius. The rainfall is limited to the season between May and October, while the rest of the year is dry. These climatic conditions favour wines characterised by intense fruit when compared to other Chilean valleys and indeed many areas worldwide.
