The Law which named us Chileans(Reads: 26, 21-Ago-2010)Almost seventy days after the battle of Maipú those us born in Chile started to call ourselves Chileans. Below is out first letter of citizenship which was sent to all the native people throughout the country. The decree was written in Santiago on the 3rd of June 1818 and published in la Gaceta Ministerial de Chile on the 20th of June. It stated the following: After gloriously proclaiming our independence, won with the blood of those who defended us, it would be shameful to allow the use of systems invented under the colonial regime. One of those was to call those who were not of mixed race, Spaniards. As we no longer depend on Spain we must not call ourselves Spaniards but Chileans. Therefore, I order that all legal information - be it in criminal matters, marriage proclamations, christenings, marriages or burials - the clause which says “Spanish national from x place” which has been in use until today should now say “Chilean national from x place”. With regard to the native indians no distinction should be made and they should be called Chileans as has been forewarned above. Transcribe this law to Governor of the Diocese so that it is circulated to the Priests in the Diocese to ensure that it is adhered to and communicated to the judges. It should be understood that if this law is not adhered to it will be seen as a lack of support for the system in America and will be sufficient cause for a libel trial where whatever punishment that is seen fit will be administered. Enacted by Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme
