The History of San Pedro de Atacama(Reads: 2552, 23-Ene-2004)In years gone by, San Pedro was one of the most important centres of the Atacameño culture. The fertile land which surrounds it was divided into sectors and worked by the families themselves.
In 1450 it was conquered by the Incas. Then, in 1536 it became a part of Spanish colonial history when Diego de Almagro passed through the town. Mineral resources have also brought financial benefits to the economy of San Pedro de Atacama, due to its contribution to the marketing of the mines. In 1870, the administrative centre of the mine, which had been formed in San Pedro, was moved to Calama. Its population, which has decreased, now makes a living from vegetable farming and tourism.
