History of La Unión

(Reads: 2075, 30-Jun-2004)

Casa Grob en la ciudad de La Unión
The city was founded by Cayetano Letelier who, in 1821, who petitioned the Supreme Government with the idea of forming a city in the El Llano sector, 10 km from the present day location of the city. This place was named Villa Libre de San Juan.

However, the city of La Unión was officially founded in 1827, with the signing of a decree authorized by the Provincial Assembly of Valdivia and not by Don Bernardo O’Higgins as is often stated.
