Francisco Puelma Salpeter Office

(Reads: 3245, 30-Jun-2004)

It used to be called Carmen Alto Salpeter Office and was one of the most important saltpeters of the time, thanks to the amount it could produce.

It had an Electricity Plant capable of supplying the energy needed here and at other plants owned by the same company.

The Francisco Puelma Salpeter Office closed down in 1932, and in 1988 a company mining iodine moved in.

Only the walls and the cemetery now remain. In the past, the number of inhabitants reached 4,800, forming a well-organized settlement. They used slabs taken from the crust of the salt flat to make their homes.
